Approximately 1-hour drive from Cantignergues
and near the Mediterranean Sea you find Narbonne. This city was once
conquered by the Mores, whose influence can be seen in the beautiful
buildings in the city centre. For trade and markets, Narbonne is
important. The city used to have an important harbour but this ended
in the year 1320 because of a sudden shift in the Aude. There was a
revival in the city in the 20th century due to the wine-trade.
Narbonne is not a large city, but it has plenty to offer. You can
spend a whole day going into shops, the archiepiscopal palace, the
gothic Cathedral of St. Just and visiting the lively square with
many cafés and a part of the original Roman road.
