The Minervois is a wine
area in Languedoc, Southern France. Even though towards the end of
the 20th century the Minervois wine farmers focused on
the quality of their wines, the area has low wine prices. In 1999 La
Liviniere became the first official cru (a
term used in wine classification) of the
villages Minervois, Siran, Fauzan, Azillanet, Félines-Minervois and
Cesseras. The law requires that true cru de Minervois is a mix of
red grapes only, with a maximum yield of 45 hl/ha.The wine must be
made from Syrah grapes, Grenache, Carigan, Cinsault, Mourvedre or
Picpoul grapes.
In Saint-Jean- de- Minervois a sweet Muscat
wine is produced. Officially, a litre of Muscat wine must contain at
least 252 gram of sugar. This Muscat de Saint- Jean- de- Minervois
has had its own Appellation Contrôlée since 1946. Many of the wine
caves welcome visitors for wine tasting!
Here are some caves that we recommend in the area:
